Three Hundred Fifteen: Giving Back

“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”  – Ronald Reagan

Wednesday, November 12th

I had a last-minute request today to care for a friend’s daughter. My friend teaches dance, and she could not bring her daughter to the daycare provided. Sure!

I have to admit that I’m a little funny about signing up for a regular nannying gig or childcare exchange. I like the freedom to follow our own star and work with the natural rhythms of my own family, but I feel the value and importance of helping out friends in need. And if helping means having a playmate for my son for the day then it is a very accommodation.

It was the perfect afternoon. Our little friend was a tad shy, but my son didn’t let her sit still. He had her dressing up and building and running around our house. It was great fun to spend time with her. And it was equally great to pay into the pool of parenting goodwill.

Is there anything that holds you back from doing favors for other people?
