“Once again…welcome to my house. Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring.” – Bram Stoker

I invited a friend over whom I’ve been spending a lot of time with lately. Our younger children get along famously, so it’s a no-brainer to hang out together. The first time she came over, she said that the scent of my home reminded her of a dear friend’s home. That was such a heartfelt complement, I decided that I would strive to keep it up whenever she came to visit.
I don’t consider myself an extremely gracious host, so I’m trying to better that. Bake bread or fix a special snack when friends come to see me. Have a pot of warm tea ready for when I have a visitor. Have a clean home when others come over. It feels good to cover those bases before someone is already here.
I got overly ambitious and had two soups going by time our friends showed up. I had the kids put the ingredients in the bread machine. The house was filled with all the right smells, and we had something to eat by the end of it!
What makes a home feel welcoming to you?
