One Hundred Twenty Five: Misappropriations

“We are, at almost every point of our day, immersed in cultural diversity: faces, clothes, smells, attitudes, values, traditions, behaviours, beliefs, rituals.” – Randa Abdel-Fattah

Monday, May 5th

And let me argue that we are also surrounded by the misappropriation and misunderstanding of one another’s beliefs and ideas as well. My friend Toby said it best on a social media post on Monday:

So, today is Cinco de Mayo… I don’t really understand how the celebration of the Battle of Puebla got to be one of the most racist “holidays” in which Americans participate, but I hope that my friends understand that wearing a sombrero and a fake mustache and generally going around acting like an ass is extremely offensive and marginalizing to our Mexican and Mexican-American friends and family. If you want to party tonight, great. Support a Mexican restaurant with your business if you choose. Just please don’t think that getting sloshed for “Mexican Independence Day” (which is in September btw) or dressing up “like a Mexican” is anything less than inappropriate. [rant over]

Do you believe that culture can be misappropriated or are we in one big cultural remix?
